Are the surnames Moß (Moss) and Moos different? or are they two forms of the same name?

Yes misspellings are not unusual. At times I have seen a whole new surname instead of the one that should be there. Best regards, Kent

I have the same problem with Gross and Goos.
The records are OCR... a machine read it. Then someone indexed it. Depending on the handwriting of the scribe and German knowledge of the indexer, you can get all sorts of name variations. I have indexed in the past.
I always check the Goos to make sure everything else matches up. If it does after the German and English translations, I put a note as a courtesy to anyone viewing the records.

Martha Murray Thanks for the response. My problem is not with the indexed version, (which is often wrong) my problem is with the actual writing of the pastor. I have lots of entries with Moß and a few that look like the following:

Back in the day there was no spell check. Even in the 1860's I have records with the same spelling error (Goos for Gross).
WOW what a find! 1703 and your section is virtually undamaged.
