Thoughts on locating town of origin in early mid 1700s?
I am attempting to locate the town of origin for my 5th great grandfather Johannes Miller. Information I have for him is that according to a journal from a traveling minister who wrote that he was a German and in his 86th year of age and that he arrived in America when he was 26 years of age. Johannes would of been born around 1727.
l have a signature of Johannes from a 1793 document that matches very closely to a signature of a Johannes Miller who arrived in America on the Ship Friendship October 21, 1754. The Johannes on board was sick which coincidentally was true for the wife of my Johannes Miller. A book on the history of the Paul/Powell family mentions that Johannes daughter Julianna was recently from Germany and that he mother became sick on board and was buried at sea. Julianna would of been born around 1747 in Germany. The ship Friendship was carrying immigrants from Hesse and Franconia.
Johannes was in Brunswick, Berks now Schuylkill Co. Pennsylvania in the 1760s -1790s before moving to Pendleton Co. Virginia/West Virginia. Some children of Johannes and Anna Margaretha Mueller were baptized in the Red Zion Lutheran church in Brunswick township PA.
is there anyway with the information I have be able to locate the town Johannes lived in Germany? Miller is a tough name to research since it is so common. I’m hoping I can narrow it down with the dates of Johannes birth and his daughter Julianna’s birth. Any strategies that someone may know would be greatly appreciated. From all records I’ve seen he always went by Johannes and no other given name.
Sincerely,
Dennis Miller
