1600s...role of Church in land ownership?
Attached is a page from a book about the family Windfuhr, which is in old German and my translation done on the site Yandex.
The passage talks about the purchase or acquisition of "Kotten Wieden" in the mid 1600s by Peter Windfuhr (1651-1706). Church books, payments to the Parish. I've also read that properties are bought and sold through the Parish.
So I'm interested to know if all lands are owned by the church in these times, is this a outcome of the Holy Roman Empire of Germania? If the church had dominion over real estate, I assume property records would then be in the church records too?
As to Kotten Wiede (or Wieden), the closest I've found on Meyers is #11050082, which was about 2 miles north of Meinerzhagen at that time. Records speak of Windfuhrs, namely Peter Windfuhr, leaving the "Windfuhr Farm" which I believe was near Kotten Wieden, after 1665.
Thanks, Bonnie Samuel

Thank you for posting such an interesting document. I've been hoping to see some property records from the time. I'm sure they are full of information. Is this the Meinerzhagen in Westfalen?
In Westfalen, and probably most of Germany, the land was owned by the Church. The peasants could only lease the land to farm it. The leases were generally inheritable property. With the Reformation, protestant areas became owned by the various nobility, but that probably didn't make a lot of difference to the peasants.
This is the best reference I've found on daily life then, https://www.worldcat.org/title/our-daily-bread-village-life-in-early-modern-germany/oclc/695473732&referer=brief_results
I've recently discovered Yandex. I have been using DeepL, and it will be interesting to see how they compare.
