Hello and a Happy St. Patrick's Day to all! โ˜˜๏ธ๐Ÿ˜Š Hoping to get some help with a Griffith's Valuation map. I believe the Timothy Sheehan listed here in Gurteenbeha, Castlemagner, County Cork is my ancestor. I can see on the map where Gurteenbeha is but not quite sure where Timothy would have lived. I see that the valuation says 1 b, and I see on the map for Gurteenbeha where the number 1 is but I don't see the letters, for example b for Timothy. So when I am looking in the area where the 1 is, is that the general area of where he would have lived? Or is there something I'm missing.

Thank you in advance.

Liz

    Good morning @Liz Chace

    According to Griffith's listing for that property, section 1 was subdivided into parts a, b, and c.
    The short answer is yes, 1b would be found in the section marked as 1 on the map.

    This explanation of the Rundale system of farming may help you.

    Thank so much! I'd never heard of the Rundale system so that information is very helpful.

    My understanding of how to read the markings on Griffith's Valuation documents is as follows.

    Numerals and the upper-case letters designate the land parcels, the uppercase letters indicating the division of an original single numerical parcel (1, 2 3, etc..) into two or more smaller parcels of land (3A, 3B, 3C, etc..).

    The lower-case letters (a, b, c, etc..) indicated a dwelling within that parcel of land.

    As you have pointed out, the sheet below would seem to indicate that Timothy Sheehan lived in dwelling b in parcel of land 1 within the Townland of Gurteenbeha. However, there is no lower-case letters marked in parcel of land 1 on the map, as shown below.

    Parcel 1 is shown to contain three dwellings, a, b & c. The first, a, is likely to be the main house "Rosnalee".

    Dwellings b and c could be one of the gate lodges shown, or any of the several other buildings on the map. With the normal lower-case letter designation missing from the map, it's impossible to tell.

    If I recall correctly, getting a set of maps that match the coding in the version of the Valuation that you're looking at - is tricky. Things changedโ€ฆ

    The map set on FindMyPast is older and more closely resembles the original valuation. The set on Ask About Ireland is of more recent vintage.

    @รine Nรญ Donnghaile I did not know that about the Griffiths maps. That is useful to know.

    @John Curran
    John Grenham's information on that topic may be helpful.
