What is the Kesteven Militia Ballot List 1834?
Does anyone know about the Kesteven Militia Ballot List of 1824? (Grantham, Lincolnshire, England) I have an ancestor, William Shaw listed in this group. I am unable to find him in a census with his wife, Eliza, but always listed in the parish registars as a father of the children. She is listed as married in the 1841 and 1851 census but widowed in the 1861. Did the members of this militia live elsewhere?

Hi, Darla,
The militias were consigned to localized areas--within the counties of England. Often a person would join the local militia in order to test the military life; then join or enlist in the British Army. It's always good to search both establishments. Quarter sessions (or courts) were responsible for keeping lists of those who had enlisted in the local militias and so you will want to try our online catalog at FamilySearch.org/catalog and search under "Lincolnshire - Court Records" to see if FamilySearch has microfilmed these records of the court, including militia records.
Additionally, here are other militia records which can be found or purchased as follows:
1) The National Archives, which the Family History Library has many of these--found under "Registers of out-pensioners of the Army and of the Militia, 1759-1863", War Office class (W.O. 118), are here:
https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/319852?availability=Family%20History%20Library
Accessible only at an FHC or the FHL or Family History Library
2) Lincolnshire military records 1795-1845 - published by the Linconshire Family History Society; downloadable at about $6.75 (U.S.)
3) Here are "Disbanded" militia groups for Lincolnshire, entitled: "List of records of disbanded militia regiments for transmission to the custody of the Master of the rolls" - see microfilm at the FHL or some FHCs or might be downloadable at the National Archives, UK [which currently are allowing free downloading of browsable images during this Covid19 'season']; one militia group is called the Royal North Lincolnshire, volume 458 1759-1853 under the following catalog page (scroll towards the very bottom): https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/44990?availability=Family%20History%20Library
4) see the Lincolnshire County Record Office/Archive website and search for "Court Records" and/or inquire via email, here at: lincolnshire.archives@lincolnshire.gov.uk. SHould they hold militia records in their archive, then you may need to hire a record agent to search for you, or, at ~£40 an hour, have the assistant archivist conduct the search for you.
Sincere hopes that one or some of these will help.
