How to find Braunschweig Records?
Hello.
I found a marriage record on Archion for my great granduncle from 1879. The marriage took place in Lippstadt, but he is identified as living in Braunschweig and was a master painter. Also on the record, was the location and occupation of the groom's father, who was identified as living in Braunschweig, and he was a Fourier. (Note: Based on other records I have, he was a Fourier in the Deutsches Marines)
- I was able to confirm through historic address books that the groom remained in Braunschweig. However, I have not been able to learn if he had children or when he died. I can approximate his death only based on the identification of his wife as a widower in an address book (1920). His street address was Plefegehaus Strasse 18. Archion records do not go past the late 1880s, and so I am sure where to search next for information on the family. The wife died in Hamburg in 1930; she resided with someone with her last name, but it does not clearly state it is her son. Any suggestions on how to obtain Braunschweig records would be greatly appreciated.
- The groom's father, my 2nd degree great grandfather, was a Fourier, and therefore associated with the military communities where he was posted. I have found such records in Hannover and Hameln. He had many other children that would have been at confirmation age while in Braunschweig in the 1880s. Yet I can find no records in Archion or other subscription based programs. Any suggestions on how I should proceed next would be greatly appreciated. Were there military communities in Braunschweig?
I am stumped with what to do next and would greatly appreciate your guidance.
Thank you for your help!

Hi Kathy, I am in a similar situation with my ancestors from Braunschweig. I have found quite a few Braunschweig records in the familysearch catalog but unfortunately not mine. Have you looked at what is available in the catalog? Here is a link of a search of the catalog that lists what documents that familysearch has.
If you click on Kirchenbuch, 1892-1939 Evangelische Kirche. Militärgemeinde Braunschweig it shows that familysearch has some Militärgemeinde Braunschweig church records from 1892 to 1932.
https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/211742?availability=Family%20History%20Library
Unfortunately, the film is only available in the Salt Lake City Library. I understand that they may have a look up service that you can request but I think you need to have the date of the record you are requesting.
If you haven't explored the catalog I encourage you to do so, you may have more luck than me.

Hello Kathy,
any birth, marriage or death after 1876 has to be registered at the "Standesamt" (public registry office). The Standesamt keeps the records as long as they are protected by the law ( i.e. 110 years for births, 80 years for marriages, 30 years for deaths). During this period you can access them only if you are a direct decendant.
After the protection period the records ("Personenstandsregister" or "Standesamtsregister") are transferred to the "Stadtarchiv Braunschweig" and are publically - but not online - accessible. Here is the link to the Stadtarchiv (only in German, sorry): https://www.braunschweig.de/kultur/bibliotheken_archive/stadtarchiv/index.php
You can check which records are available here: https://www.stadtarchiv-braunschweig.findbuch.net/php/main.php?ar_id=3697. The Standesamt docs can be found under "E 034". Birth records for 1876-1906, marriage records for 1876-1936, and death records for 1876-1986 are completely available. There are also name indexes per year, but all this is avalable only on site, so you would need to go there yourself or hire someone to do the research.
Good luck!

Hello Kathy,
there seems to be a spelling error in "Plefegehaus Strasse 18". Could it be "Pflegehaus Strasse"?
Such a street name does not exist any more in Braunschweig. However, I found the street in an old map from 1890 (https://publikationsserver.tu-braunschweig.de/servlets/MCRFileNodeServlet/dbbs_derivate_00009441/Vorlage.pdf, plan square C2).
The street is now called "Holwedestrasse".

@Ulrich Neitzel Thank you so much for your assistance with my Braunschweig research questions. My apologies for the error in spelling; Pflegehaus Strasse is the correct spelling, not Plefegehaus. The map you provided is great! I know it will be quite useful as I continue my research. Thank you very much for the link!

@JohnsonGreg Thank you for providing the links to the FamilySearch catalog for Braunschweig. I am going to contact the Library to find out more about the lookup service as well as the what might be available at local branches. During the height of COVID, I was able to use the look service once; they were very helpful and the data provided to me was invaluable. I was under the impression that that service was made available because of the pandemic but clearly I was wrong. I really appreciate your help! Thanks again!!

@Ulrich Neitzel Thank you for the information you provided on the archive of Braunschweig. It was most helpful. I wish that my circumstances allowed for a trip to Germany so that I could visit the archive and do my own research. I have run into a similar situation with records I need from Hameln. I will contact the archive and learn what I can about the researchers for hire. Your thoughtful responses are always genuinely appreciated!
