The first question is, in 1847 do you know if this family was free or slave? That would determine which records to look at. If free, you would want to look in the Free Negro Registry for the county your family lived. If slave, you would be looking for emancipation papers. Either slave or free, you would want to look in Freedmen records. Such a bank records, or marriage records ("co-habitation book").
