How to attach a census file that has a relationship mistake
in attempting to attach a census source I discovered that a relationship to the head of household is listed incorrectly which makes it impossible to attach the source. They are listed as Father and Mother to head of household when they are actually his in-laws, they are his wife's parents. I don't know what to do about this so assistance would be appreciated. Thanks.

.
Question: WHY is it impossible to "attach" the "Source"?
.
As far as I am aware ...
.
You can usually "Move" the "References", being the People in the "Source" (ie. 'Left-Hand-Side') in the "Census" Record, to any of the People in the Family; or, even, Extended Family (ie. 'Right-Hand-Side') being the "Family Tree".
.
As, sometimes, the actual "Relationship" to the "Head" of the Household in the Census is wrong or misleading.
.
Just curious.

Hello, I encourage you to fix errors before attaching the source document.
If there is no error on familysearch. at this time you can move the person to the right person by clicking on it and hold the click and move it to the right person. Also you can change the Person of Record and Spouse to the right person.
Here is a link that shows you how to do this but it is in French. But its can help because it is visual.

Hope this will help you.

You have to change the main person from the husband to the wife. At the top right on the fs side, there is a change button for the main person. Click change and choose the wife. Do the same on the left. Open her parents above her if not open. You should be able to slide her parents to the top if fs hasn’ already done it for you.

I can't fix an error when it's an error in the census document itself. The people listed as the head of household's father and mother are his father-in-law and mother-in-law. I can't attach the census document to him as a source because his actual father and mother are attached to him already in other documents.

so here's the problem. I can't attach the census record to the two people that are listed incorrectly in the census record as his father and mother that are actually his father-in-law and mother-in-law. When I go to 'review and attach record' the first category that comes up is 'person of record and spouse' listed as 'father' and 'mother'. I can attach them. The second category that's listed is 'children on record' and it lists the head of household and his wife. The wife is the actual child so I can attach her. I can't attach the head of household because he is not their child. By not attaching him that source will show up as an unfinished attachment in the sources section of both people listed incorrectly in the census document.

okay, based on your comment about sliding the parents I decided to try sliding the head of household to the 'other on record' category and it worked. It's no longer listed as an unfinished attachment. So much to learn. Thanks for the idea.

well, I spoke too soon. It didn't work. When I went back to the tree and clicked on them again to check the sources that census is back to an 'unfinished attachment' and the head of household is back to 'children on record'. I guess it'll have to stay as unfinished then because I can't think of any other way to manage it when the source document is wrong.

can you give me the id’s. i dont think you understood. you have to change the focus person 1st . Do you mind if I look at it. It doesnt matter that it says its the husbands parents it will still attach.

you cant just move it in this case. you have to change the focus person.

This is a little tricky and it would help if I could see the record and your person but I'll try to explain it.
On the record there is a silhouette and a triangle. You can change the focus person. So you need to look at the record on the man's page. Column one has "Parents on Record" and will have the in-law's name. Column two has "Parents from Family Tree" which will have the man's parents and they don't match. The Change and triangle button should be above the man's name in Column two (don't use the one in Column one). Click on the triangle and it says "Change Focus Person" with a box "Go To:" enter the PID for the wife.
Now you can attach the parents to the wife's parents.
