Hi

I would love some help translating this death certificate for Borbála Bukovinszki, which is the one that is labeled #5.

    Hello,

    Here it is:

Died on March 22, 1946 at 2 am, the death was registered on March 25, her married name was Magda Gyuláné (wife of Magda Gyula), she was 47 and her religion was reformed (Calvinist), her parents were István Bukovinszki and Julianna Bori (both passed away, noted by the "néhai" word), and she died of a gunshot to the heart. It was not noted whether it was a suicide, an accident or murder. Her death was reported by her husband.

By the way, I looked into the Hungarian newspaper archives to see if there was anything about her death. I did not find that, but there was an official report from 1937 that she had a warrant because she did not pay the proper taxes after the artificial sweetener she used (she was a seller at a Budapest market). They noted that she was born in Szentistvánbaksa and that her last known residence in Budapest was in Vendel Street 34 in District IX.

And one more hit. On October 11, 1933, customs agents had a surveillance operation in District IX as they were were investigating saccharin smuggling. One of the houses they had under surveillance was where she lived. When she saw the customs agents, she thought that she is in trouble and started to yell at them, saying that "you'll get it from me, I'll beat you up with a baton and pour acid on you!" She was arrested and got in front of the judge (this is where the record is from). She pleaded not guilty, though there were witnesses to what she said. The agents said that they were not too worried as they knew that it was just yelling. Nonetheless, she was fined to pay 80 pengő (the Hungarian currency at that time).

She was definitely a character. :)

    Hey @Eljay14

Thank you so much for all of your help I seriously appreciate it. This is all stuff I had no idea about and really helps put some pieces together.

Where did you find those 1933 + 1937 newspaper things you mentioned? If you have links, can you send them? (Or even just the site/name of the archive + what you searched, and I can try to pull them up.)

Also random, but I wanted to share the only story I’d ever heard about her in my family: apparently Gyula came back from town and found her dead, and he believed it was the Soviets who did it… and that she was found under a mattress. No idea how accurate that is, but your translation (gunshot to the heart) made that story pop back into my head.

And honestly… reading what you found, I can’t help but wonder if something happened with a Soviet soldier or someone in power back then. She sounded like she didn’t hold back.

Thank you again for all of your help.
