How can we add functionality to export the database to Excel?
The reason I need to export the database to excel is that I want an easy way to see how many people are born in each year. Our family trust tries to give some money for college education so it'd be really nice to see in the upcoming years (1,3,5,10 years out) how many kids will be turning college age in the family tree for planning purposes.

That's a bit intricate for the purposes that Family Group Trees are built for. See Todd Powell's comment explaining the purposes of Family Group Trees.
You will probably need to either keep track of these children in your own FamilySearch Tree (you can then download to a third-party program and print a report from that program) or simply keep all of this information in a third-party program from the start. You can use a file-sharing system such as Dropbox, Google Drive or OneDrive and all family members could access the main file through the third-party program to add current information to it.
