Hello and thanks for letting me be a part of this community,

I'm doing research on my wife's side of the family which includes both Swedish and Danish ancestors. Her paternal gr-grandfather, Ernest Johnson, was born on Sep 24, 1878. I think I've found his birth record (please see image). Another record, his WWII Draft enlistment card, says he was born in Kalsom, Sweden, however, I have not yet been able to locate the place. Can someone please provide me with some guidance?

Thanks,

Bill

    @William Farrell_1

The birth record says that Ernest (Ernst) was born in the parish of Hällaryd, at a location called Långehall, see map below.

The nearest bigger town is Karlshamn which - when pronounced with Swedish accent - may sound to American ears like Kalsom.

The Ernst in your birth record emigrates to the LaSalle, Illinois in 1897 but his name on all of the emigration records is Ernst Månsson. Månsson would be his patronym (ie. his father's first name is Måns and so he is Ernst, Mån's son) but it is possible that Ernst changed to his father's last name of Johansson (Americanized to Johnson) at some point after arriving in the U.S. Do you have any idea when your Ernest Johnson emigrated to the U.S.?

If he came to Illinois in or about 1897, then Ulrich is probably correct about Karlshamn being the Kalsom on the draft card.

You can see Ernst Månsson here in the moving records from Hällaryd, Blekinge, Sweden (#4): https://sok.riksarkivet.se/bildvisning/00114876_00013#?c=&m=&s=&cv=12&xywh=2530%2C95%2C2578%2C1373.

I am also attaching an image from Ancestry showing him going to LaSalle:

The record below gives his name, birthdate and birth place so you can be certain that it is the person in the birth record you have. It is also from Ancestry:

I forgot to give you this link of Ernst's birth record. It is a lot clearer and much easier to read: https://sok.riksarkivet.se/bildvisning/C0057407_00156#?c=&m=&s=&cv=155&xywh=543%2C1791%2C5172%2C2754.

    Hi Norm,

Thanks for the info and the links. I had no idea about his patronym until your note.

I can't yet say for certain when Ernest came to the US--I hope to resolve that soon but I believe you are correct that it was in 1897. I think he came to Whiteside County in Illinois first near Prophetstown and Tampico before settling down near Utica, IL.

About the moving record you included--there's a name about Ernest's who seems to be a relation--can you make out who that is and how they might be related?

Thanks to your providing me the link to Ernest's birth record, I was also able to get a copy (attached) of his brother Viktor/Victor's birth record. He was born in same location of Ernest on 29 Dec 1881. He lived with Ernest and Ernest's wife, Emma (nee Jacobsen). He died in 1959. Ernest died on his farm on 21 Aug 1962. Emma was Danish. She was born in Hasle on 24 Apr 1885 and died on the farm near Utica on 5 Oct 1962.

If I get info on his emigration to US, I will let you know. Thanks again!

    v/r

In the moving record, 8th column, it says that Ernst is on page 295 in the Household Examination record. You can see him here (line 15): https://sok.riksarkivet.se/bildvisning/C0057393_00307#?c=&m=&s=&cv=306&xywh=-14%2C1671%2C2468%2C1195. His father is Måns Johannsson (line 13). On the far right of the page, you can see the date that Ernst left the parish (12 February 1897). It says he is going to "N. Amerika" and the number of his "moving certificate" is 4 (ie, line 4 in the moving record).

The Oscar Månsson you are asking about is on page 301 (noted in the same 8th column). He is here in the Household Examination record (line 4): https://sok.riksarkivet.se/bildvisning/C0057393_00313#?c=&m=&s=&cv=312&xywh=25%2C419%2C1911%2C996. Oscar's father is Måns Håkansson (line 1). You can see on the far right of the page, that Oscar is moving on the same date as Ernst (12 February 1897" and his "moving certificate" number is 3 (line 3 in the moving record). So Ernst and Oscar are not related at all.

    Norm,

Thanks for clarifying about the relationship between Ernst and Oscar. Thanks, too, for the additional information about the moving record.
