Researching the history of street names in Sicily
Hello all,
This is a very obscure question. I am curious if this community has any tips for researching the local history of street names in Sicily.
My great-grandmother was born in 1874 in Siculiana, Sicily on a street named "via Attanasio". I found a modern street in Siculiana named "Nicolo Attanasio". I cannot say for certain this modern street is the same as her birth street, but it's very likely the same since her Uncle (b. 1846) and her Great-Grandfather (b 1772) were both named Nicolo Attanasio and presumably this is where the street got its name and why she was born here (it would have been the location of her mother's side of the family).
My question is - WHY did Nicolo Attanasio get a street named after him? Was he a landowner, an influential businessman, a local government official or ???
I have written to the local history museum in Siculiana with the same question but have not received comment. Perhaps there are other resources available to research this?
I really appreciate any/all help on this matter.
Thank you
Anthony
