      @Kathy4959

      The certificate is made 29 may 1800, and the declaration of the birth is done by the midwife, Maria Elisabeth Smets,..etc, who declares that 'in her presence' at 12 hr noon,a child is born,at the adress, N Rapenburgstraat 184; from Cornelia Bekker, and given the name of Cornelia...then two witnesses agree and co-sign the certif along with the legal representative (signature).

      The only interesting part, is the annotation in the left hand corner above , and this is an annotation made later on,saying..."this child is by legal marriage, done here by Ambros Sieben and Cornelia Bekker, recognised as from their both on date of 15 January 1851.

      I tried to locate the birthcertificate of Ambrosius, in the stash of Fam/search here, but altough they have Nackenheim in their catalogue, it is a restricted fold, viewing availiable only at a fam/center on desk.

      So probably as a seaman, Ambros was absent for a long period of time ,which was very common,..also, the midwife testifies when the man is absent or unknown.

      I would suggest another 'sense',..for Deserted from his ship, as no annotation to that remark is to be found in the censusdocument,and would this have been a military desertion,...he would have been arrested anyway,so he probably left his ship without permission, not to return,the way left the wife behind to sail Australia , en left her behind.So probably not a military desertion,anyway, i did not find any conviction.

      I the above case , btw, i would suggest to maintain,as you stated,"I cannot find any record of his arrival. I can locate an 'Ambrosius Sieben' born on 19 Feb 1818 in Nachenheim, Hessen, Germany, but his father was Michaelis Sieben and his mother, Anna Maria Koch."; these names and not Christian,altough this could very well be an additional name, the name of a stepfather,or wrongly attributed by the scribe to be meant as Cristian, (of cristian faith)? , but anyway , if you can link me to the marriage certificate , i can review it myself if you like.

      Hi Adrien,

      Thank you so much! This is all very interesting, and I appreciate your help very much!

      Does the certificate say 29 may 1800 or is it 1850??

      This is the birth extract from Adelaide. Unfortunately the certificate (on microfiche) doesn't contain any extra information. When I started researching him, I thought 42 was quite old to be getting married for the first time - but it makes sense now - if I have the right Ambrose!

      I looked on FindmyPast for other children of Michael Sieben and Anna Maria Koch. They were married in 1807 and had 5 children, 1 of whom died young. The firstborn in 1808 was a son named Christian, which I thought was interesting. There were two daughters, Anna Maria and Eva, and then the youngest son, Ambrose, born in 1818.

      I'm wondering about the crews of ships... Do you think there might be records of the crewmen on ships leaving Amsterdam in 1852-53?? Just another thought.

      Anyway, thanks again for your help, Adrien.

      Kindest regards,

      Kathys
