A Strange One
Looking at a relative on my wife's family tree, she has a 2 x great grandfather, Alexander Parkinson, showing as born in Tower Hamlets London in 1864.
His father, Richard Noble Parkinson was born in Over Darwin, which is a backwater near Blackburn in 1827 and his father, Robert Parkinson also born in Over Darwin in 1802.
The fly in the ointment is the 1871 census which shows Richard now in Manchester with Alexander.
My question, do I assume its the correct Alexander and assume that Richard lived in London at the time of his birth, or do I work on the basis its the wrong Alexander??

Personally I would feel uncomfortable that it is the same Alexander. To move from Blackburn down to London and then back to Manchester seems unlikely but clearly possible. What is the birth place of Alexander in the 1871 census?
Bear in mind that Alexander is not a common name but Parkinson is.
The GRO offers two records in the period 1863-1865, neither of whom was born in Tower Hamlets.

Like you Graham I found the Bolton birth too and given the absence of anything nearer, this seems the more likely one, I'll dig a little deeper and see if I can find evidence to confirm it.
