A friend is travelling to Zeeland for research. She plans to access the Zeeland archives in Middleburg but was hoping also to research on site in any possible places in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. Some years ago she did some research in Oostburg but says it appears the place no longer exists. Would anyone know of any regional or local archives or historical societies in Zeeuws-Vlaaneren? She is researching families from the Oostburg and Cadzand areas.

    First of all: ever more archives have their archives online, with the actual documents no longer available for viewing. For Zeeland the provincial website is https://www.zeeuwsarchief.nl/en/. I don't know what parts of the collection are available for viewing at their premises.

    In Zeeuws Vlaanderen there are some historical socities:

    Heemkundige Kring West-Zeeuws-Vlaanderen - https://www.heemkundigekring-wzv.nl/

    Oudheidkundige Kring De Vier Ambachten - https://www.devierambachten.nl/

    As to Oostburg: yes, it still exists: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oostburg

    @gjt47

    Ik ben in de 4 ambachten geboren, met name in Assenede.Uiteraard vrij veel in de geschiedenisboeken gezeten voor wat de 4 Ambachten betreft ,maar ook Zeeuws-Vlaanderen natuurlijk.Dit als een terzijde.

    Thank you. Re: Oostburg, I meant that the smaller archive location that she visited in Oostburg many years ago no longer exist, not Oostburg itself! ; )

    I just joined the group so this is probably no longer relevant but thought I'd answer just in case it helps someone else. Because of municipal mergers, Oostburg is now part of the municipality of Sluis, and the archives moved there too. This is the website: https://www.gemeentesluis.nl/Bestuur_en_Organisatie/Archief/Archief

    Most records for Cadzand and Oostburg are kept at the Zeeuws Archief in Middelburg though, including church records, notarial records, and court records.
