Akt Znania - Marianna Baryga

I found this Akt Znania for Marianna Baryga; though I don’t really understand what this document is. It seems to be part of the Napoleonic legal code, and is meant to confirm the identity of one person, based on the testimony of another? When was such an act required, what purpose did it serve, who needed one, why. etc…?
The writing is difficult to make out but this is what I gather:
Jan Dambrowa, a 52 year old catholic, born, raised, and living in Boguszyn. He has known Maryanna (unknown maiden name) Baryga, a widow, for 26 years.

Mike, you are correct as to interpretation of the "Akt Znania"
“Akt Znania “ was issued when a person intending to get married, did not have a copy of the birth record, and it was impossible or very difficult to obtain it. It was often obtained in Jewish marriages, as the person now lived long distance from the place of birth, or the records were destroyed.
In this case Maryanna Barygowna, a widow from village Boguszyn, does not have her birth record, which she needs to get remarried. Jan Domrowa, a Roman Catholic, 52 years old, has known Maryanna for 26 years. She does not know the names of her parents, as she was a young child, 6 years old, when her parents died.

A follow-up comment on this:
The akt znania is dated 12 Jan 1814, and indeed Maryanna got married a month later to Bartłomiey Kamieński [ref1]
Interestingly though, her last name on this marriage act is Kozbial, instead of Baryga. One would think that the marriage act would list the name as it appears on the Akt znania.
I've found about a dozen records pertaining to this family and sometimes they used the name Baryga, other times they used Kozbial. It seems a bit random.
