I have many ancestors that lived all over Copenhagen but I have no idea where and in what parish. What is the best strategy for initiating a search without pre-knowledge of the location of their residence?

This Friday, Sept. 15 at 2:30 Mountain time there will be a class on Research in Copenhagen. This would be a great class for you to attend. I am sure the presenter would be able to give you some pointers.

Thank you so much. I'll plan a trip to Salt Lake and attend in person.

If you can't make it to SLC this week, you can try searching the parish records index on myheritage.com. They have a Denmark Church Record Index 1813-1919. In "advanced search" under the research tab enter the birth name and birth year (full date if you have it). You may have to go through a few pages of results to find what you are looking for. You'll know them by parent's names if you have them and the full birth date. We found my husband's great-grandmother's birth record in this index; she was born in Copenhagen and we didn't know which parish to search.

Thank you for that wonderful answer, Cynthia. You made my day and gave me some very needed hope of finding my Copenhagen ancestors :).

Cynthia, you would really enjoy the FamilySearch webinar "Research in Copenhagen (Kobenhavn)" by my friend A. Boyd Nielsen. Look for it to be posted in FamilySearch wiki, past webinars in maybe a couple weeks? There will also be a very helpful handout to print. If you can find your person in the census records you'll see what part of the city (quarter) and street they live on. This street name is key to helping you find the church they may have attended.
