Confusion on Italian compounded last names
Hi,
The following document was translated by @Cousin Vinny back in 2024, which I really appreciate!
But I had a question in regards to the compounded or hyphenated last names.
I sent the marriage allegati for my great grandmother, Maria Reinerio for a translation request and @Cousin Vinny found the original birth/baptism here:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CS8K-NW1J-X?i=630&cat=442702
And here's how he translated it:
Born 6 Feb 1860, baptized 7 Feb. Father Giacomo Reinerio (son of deceased Giovanni Domenico and of deceased Maria Teresa Giroldo), mother Maria Anna Vittone Corio (daughter of deceased Gio. Domenico and of deceased Margarita Tarro Ricca Ozellno).
My confusing 4 part question is:
- Maria Reinerio's mother is Maria Anna Vittone Corio who is the daughter of deceased Gio. Domenico. Would Gio. Domenico's last name also be, Vittone Corio or would it be one or the other last name?
Also, Gio Domenico's wife, Margarita has 3 last names.
2. So, how would I search the records for those with a compounded last names?
3. Do I start with the first (last name) or the second (last name)?
4. Will their parents have the same compounded last names?
😂 this my first time running into this kind of research.
Thanks, as always, for all of your help! 😊
Mark

@Mark83614 When using the Full Text search, I’d suggest entering both names without the hyphen. That way the search engine (and the AI behind it) can catch all possible records with those names included.
I"m not sure about the parents name being compounded -
@Cousin Vinny would you know?

It's hard to say on the compound surnames. Sometimes it was just to distinguish branches of a larger family in a particular place.
Here's a stillborn baby in 1858 to the same couple. No mothers of the parents mentioned though: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CS8K-NWRM-P
And here's the marriage in 1857: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CS8K-J35R-P

Here's what appears to be Maria Anna's baptism in 1822 (although it says Maria Clara Cristina), #46: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CS8K-JSVY-9
Father's surname is just Vittone (Giacomo Domenico, son of deceased Vincenzo) but mother is Maria daughter of Giacomo Taro-Ricca-Osellino
