Translated from Polish:
Birth Record No. 88, Tłokinia Parish, Kalisz, of Franciszek Kura, born in Kolonia Nowa on 11th August 1849, at 7 pm, christened on 19th August 1849, at 1 pm, son of Bartłomiej Kura, a tenant farmer, resident in Kolonia Nowa, 40 years old, and of his wife, Antonina, born Tatas, 30 years old. Witnesses: Jan Burek, 30 years old, and Wawrzyniec Kołodziej, also 30 years old, both residents of Tłokinia. Godparents: Andrzej Szmaja and Maryanna Olejnikowa from Kolonia Nowa.
Comment: Relying on herby.com.pl/indexslo.html – surnames in Poland in year 1998, I found that there were 76 people in Poznan which were spelled as Tatuś, and none as Tatas. Consequently, in previous translations of those records, where writing was not very clear I used the surname Tatuś. At that time people did not have written or printed IDs, and recorders wrote what they heard or perceived as correct spelling. If Tatas is your preferred spelling for this surname, I will follow your recommendation from now on.

In regards to the comment - all records seem to refer to Tatas as the surname. Still need to to translate Antonina's parents death records but they also seem to say Tatas. I'm currently inclined to record as Tatas until I follow this lineage into the 20th century where it may reveal otherwise ( or even die out?). Cheers.

I have various families wherein the name changes as we move from the 1700's through the 1800's. I understand that surnames where not set in stone. I have one family wherein the Baptisms of the 9 children from 1791 to 1812 were all recorded with no surname. I was able to link them to the family by marriage and death records, but this too was a challenge. When the male children were to marry the priest entered a surname against the baptism - and in one of the later boys also the mothers maiden name. The father of my GGGGrandfather was Maciej so his name in the death record was Maciaszek, as was the 4 children who died young (all deaths before 1813). The eldest daughter married under her mothers maiden name Justyniak, 2 of the surviving boys married and had their surnames recorded as Maćkowski and the mother died under Maćkowski - all these records I could trace. The last 2 boys had surnames entered against their baptisms as Maciejewski and Macaszczyk, I am yet to trace any marriage or death records for them. One has to go with the flow as what is expected is not always what it located. Thanks for all your help.
