Looking for Records on Kevin Barry, Dublin Barman Killed by Black and Tans
Hello everyone,
I wanted to share some information about my great-grandmother’s brother, Kevin Barry. He is not the famous Kevin Barry, but a different individual who lived in Dublin. When Kevin was around 19 years old, working as a barman, he was punched with the barrel of a gun by members of the Black and Tans, who later killed him.
I have looked for his death record on the Irish Genealogy website but found no results except for a Kevin Barry who was executed—likely the famous one.
If anyone has any records, stories, or information about this Kevin Barry, I would be very grateful to learn more to help with my family history.
Thank you!

Wikipedia indicates that recruitment for the Black and Tans commenced in January 1920, and the force was disbanded by the end of 1922.
So, if your Kevin Barry was killed by the action of the Black and Tans, the years 1920 to 1922 would be the relevant years. It would be prudent to include 1923 as a death occurring late in 1922 may not be recorded to 1923. Thus, 1920 to 1923 would be the years to search.
Looking at those years in the death records for Dublin (Dublin North, Dublin South & Dublin) there are 70 recorded deaths with surname Barry or similar (Barry, Carry, Garry, Barr, Farry, Parry, Warry, Berry). Unfortunately, there are no deaths for a person of 19 +/- 5 years who is recorded as having a cause of death related to what you describe.
Could he have died in a place other than Dublin? Could some of the details be incorrect?

Quick update on the Kevin Barry I’ve been researching — just found a birth record for a John Kevin Barry, and it has the correct parents listed, so I’m pretty confident it’s him.
Looks like Kevin was actually his middle name, and he went by that instead of John.
Kind of a fun find! I didn’t realize how common it was for people to go by their middle names — has anyone else run into this in their research?

@Jack61450 Being known by your middle name in day-to-day life is super common in Ireland, both then and still today.
