Keep the 'Find Memories' Page

I have found several photographs of ancestors not previously tagged using the "Find Memories" page and it'd be a real shame for it to disappear. I think the biggest challenge in its broad use has been the fact that the page is a bit hidden. Photographs and newspaper clipping stories are some of the most valuable ways to humanize our ancestors and connect with them— removing the "find memories" would be a step back.

    @keppeler

    Thank you for providing feedback.

    We are logging all responses from this group. They will be shared with the Memories Team. We truly appreciate the time you have taken to share your thoughts.

    If possible, could you share any more details about what you enjoyed most from either the “People” or “Find” page, or any improvements you might like to see?

    @AmberML1
    I did not discover the "Find" page for memories until about a month ago, despite being a FamilySearch user for many years. When I did find it, I spent a lot of time doing keyword searches for different surnames in my family, finding several previously untagged photos of some 19th century family members. This made me realize how great of a tool the "Find" page was and I looked forward to adding it to my genealogical research toolkit!

    Its removal from the site I can only assume to be because of low usage, and I would argue this is because the page is fairly hidden (as mentioned in my initial comment). I think the memories function of FamilySearch is a severely underrated and underutilized genealogical resource— especially given that many people upload old photos of ancestors, many of whom are not identified. I could imagine a very useful tool in the future where facial recognition could be used across all uploaded photo content to link families with hints consisting of previously unknown photos of their ancestors. This may encourage people to not only upload photos of identified ancestors, but also unidentified ancestors.

    We appreciate your feedback. And we are logging these notes.

    Thankfully, the "Find Memories" function will return (though not for awhile—the code was critically old and in need of updates, which will take time). Your feedback will help us improve the coming return of "Find." Thanks again.

    I like the Memories page because it allows people see and find family photos that have been withheld from other family members.

    Some people are using it for family photo storage.

    I agree with other comments that the Memories features is a valuable resource, although in my experience it may be under-utilized or utilized somewhat incorrectly by many users, as most Memories I see attached to people seem to be "dumped" there in a person's page with little identifying information (e.g. event date, comments, notes, circumstances, original source, repository found, etc.).

    Rather than "removing" the Memories page or feature, I think it should be enhanced, and I hope that is what's going on. The Memories feature should not allow "dumping" without that other clarifying information mentioned above. In the Memory upload process, the FS program should add pop-up windows that ask the contributor to add those other key pieces of information that describe the photo, image or data, such as date, circumstance, source, repository, etc. Or create the ability for others to add or clarify that information if the contributor failed to do so, rather than locking everyone else out from having the ability to modify the uploaded Memory.

    I'd appreciate a more definitive explanation of what changes are being made to the Memories enhancement and how long it is expected to be unavailable before uninterrupted access is once again permitted.

    I agree, please keep the "Find Memories" page and make it easier to locate. Sharing and finding family photos is one of the main reasons I use this site. Please bring it back soon! :-)

    I am a frequent user of Familysearch from Sweden, but have not used it as much as I would have liked, because I have missed memories. I am learning more gradually, and as I said, I have missed some, since I have mostly worked with the family tree. Now it came up about people memories, and it would be a loss if it disappeared with photos, since I have found many relatives around the USA, of course Sweden, so it would be very fun for me and others to perhaps find information and pictures of my and other relatives, that you cannot find otherwise. It is a treasure for many here.
