Concerns About Negative Historical Events in Timelines
Hi everyone, I wanted to share some thoughts and concerns about the historical events that FamilySearch includes in the timeline feature for our relatives.
While I appreciate the effort to give context to our ancestors’ lives, I was really disappointed to see that my brother’s timeline included events like drug violence, secret political killings, and corruption in Mexico. These types of entries don’t reflect the full picture of the country or its people—and honestly, they feel one-sided and discouraging.
There are so many positive and inspiring aspects of Mexico’s history that could be highlighted instead. For example, Mexico is the second country in the world with the highest number of Latter-day Saint members and temples. That’s something to be proud of and worth sharing in our family stories.
I also couldn’t help but notice that timelines for other countries, like the United States, don’t seem to include similarly negative events—such as mass shootings, racism, drug abuse, or homelessness—which are very real parts of their history and the present too.
I think it’s important that FamilySearch promotes a more balanced and uplifting view of each country’s journey, especially in a place where we come to feel connected, inspired, and proud of our heritage.
Thanks for letting me share. I’d love to hear if others have noticed the same thing or have any thoughts.
