In this sorozás in the County of Győr in 1883 ( DGS 8737904),

IMG 31/404, line 1 eszrevétele: 2. utó ember; IMG 30/404, line 2 eszrevétele: 3 utó ember.

A Gyakorlás Regulamentuma a Magyar Felkelő Nemesség Lovasságának, 1809: Utó ember = Hintermann.

What exactly is an utó ember or Hintermann and why were so very few recruits selected to be one? Please also give me a reference to a German word list that defines it.

After a diligent foray onto the information superhighway, I am able to answer my own question. Hintermann means rear-rank man. The line of battle consisted of two ranks, the front-rank and the rear-rank. Each man in the rear-rank had to be slightly taller than the man immediately before him in the front-rank, in order to safely aim his weapon.
