Translation Request Hungarian Marriage Record 1834
Please help with the translation of this marriage record, which can be found in the FHL Film 1978723, page 23, Image 43, record 2. The date is 13 Jan 1834, the village is Csany and I think the groom is Janos Magyar and the bride is Anna Valyak??

Válik and Vályik are the same name, really: the palatal L sound originally denoted by "ly" has now merged with consonantal /y/ in all but a few tiny dialects, but in 1834, it was still distinct for most people — but there were no spelling rules yet, so the difference between L and palatal L may have been left to context.
Well, technically, there were rules by 1834: they were first published in 1832. The chances of a random clerk or pastor in "upstate" Hungary knowing anything whatsoever about that are approximately nil, and the chances are even lower for those rules influencing how he wrote people's names.

By Ferenc Kopré preacher.(Apologies for the non-standard phrasing; I'm trying to stick as close to the original as I can.) I'm not at all certain of my reading of the bride's surname, because this guy made such huge loops, but I'm pretty sure the line crossing through the middle of the name is all the G's loop from the line above.

Julia, Thank you once again for the excellent translation. Is it possible that the surname of the bride in this record is Vályik. I searched the records from Györke (Durkov), film 1978740 and found many records with the surname of Vályik and given names of Anna and György. I have not found Anna's birth record among them. I will keep searching.

Hello Julia, based on your translation of this marriage record I thought I would search for Janos’ birth record. From the marriage record we know he was from Csany, his father’s name was Mihaly, he was married in 1834 and the witnesses at the marriage were Istvan Szilagyi Jr and Sr and Pal Varga. So I began my search in film 1978722, item 6 and on Image 9, page 7, record 1, I found a birth record where the father is Mihaly Magyar and the mother is Maria Szilagyi. Since two of the witnesses at the marriage were Szilagyis and the mother on this birth record is Szilagyi, I think there is good chance that this birth record could be that of Janos Magyar. I do not see the name of the child on this record. The birth date is xxx 15 1810 (can’t read the month).. If he was born in 1810, he would have been 24 years old when he married in 1834. I suppose another reason there is no child name on this record is that the child was stillborn and therefore was not baptized and did not receive a name. Could you please look at this record and let me know if you see the child’s name anywhere on the record? Also do you think the mother’s given name is Maria.
It may be of some help to look at two other birth records on this same film where the parents are Mihaly Magyar and Maria Szilagyi. These records can be found on Image 9, page 7, record 10, date 12 Sep 1812, child Andras and on Image 11, page 9, record 10, date 30 Aug 1818, Child Maria.

Godmother: Mrs. Mihály Horvath, "new serf"Given that there are godparents, a stillbirth seems unlikely; I think the Rev. Boros simply forgot to record the child's name. Perhaps he was distracted by entering the twins on the next two lines.
Újjobbágy is literally-by-parts "new" and "serf, villein", and Kázmér's surname dictionary explains it as a feudal serf who has newly arrived (perhaps from another holding of the same lord), but given the relatively late date and the frequency of the term in this register (both as surname and as apparent description), I wonder if it's the Rev. Boros's variation on újparaszt "new peasant" or újlakos (Latin neocolonus) "new settler", which were some of the labels (or euphemisms) used for the Roma in the wake of Maria Theresa's 1761 decree (instead of zigan, czigány, etc.). (Other labels from the same era include újmagyar "new Hungarian" and újpolgár "new citizen".)
