How do I get immigration records in Canada?

Hello,

Our family of 7 emigrated from the Netherlands to Canada, we arrived in Halifax in the spring of 1958. I would like to get a passenger list or port of entry document, but I don't know where to order these documents. Are these records still at Pier 21 in Halifax?

Years ago, I am an American citizen, and years ago I was told that I have to be a Canadian citizen to order these, or if I know someone, who is a Canadian citizen, they can order the documents for me. Is that still the law in Canada today?

    Hi

I suppose you could try searching the Europe to North America manifests located here. Maybe you will get lucky. You will need to know some details to make the search easier.

    https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/1916283

Also, In case you have access, MyHeritage has a searchable index for some of those manifests.

Check the FS Wiki for details

Also, not knowing the finer details of your specific case, it is hard to recommend much more, but Ancestry has a database as well regarding Dutch Reformed Church.

    Immigration records after 1935

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) holds the records of immigrants who arrived from 1936 to the present. Library and Archives Canada does not have copies of those records.

You can submit an application to IRCC by using one of their forms:

    • Access to Information and Privacy (ATIP) Online Request
    • Application for a Verification of Status (VOS) or Replacement of an Immigration Document

You can address questions about those forms to IRCC.

    Hello, Áine Ní Donnghaile

    Thank you for the information.

I checked it out, but it all seems rather complicated.

Thanks again for sending me the links.

    Hi SantaNinfa

Thank you very much for the information.

I found the ship "Rijndam", and a couple of records on both familysearch and on myheritage, both records were related to freight. The documents showed how much each individual paid for the freight. Very interesting documents, Apparently, my father paid the highest amount, $ 3766.50, and the other document showed he paid $482.00 for overfreight.

Next, I will check out the Rotterdam archive,

Thank you again for the great tips.

    Mieke
