Great-grandfather, Jasper Newton Smith, b c 1830 in South Carolina. I can go to my local library to view "Index to the 1800 census of South Carolina." Is that likely to help?

The 1800 census for South Carolina will not list your great-grandfather since he was not yet born. In addition, the 1800 census does not list children - only the heads of households. You may find his father listed or perhaps his grandfather.

You can view and search the 1800 census online here: https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/1804228

I could have been more specific. I am searching for my great-great-grandfather. Yes, I am aware that Jasper Newton Smith was not yet born. Thank you for the link!

You'll find all the US censuses from 1790 through 1950 are available and searchable by name on this site. https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/list?count=100&cqs=united+states+census Good luck!
