Black Smith Records

While in Austria, I had to have a Giestliche Auswies, or the right to practice my religion. My ancestor was a black smith in the Prussian Empire. Where would I look for such a record for him to have permission to be a black smith? This would have been before the 1850's.

Um, "blacksmith" is an occupation, not a religion. Some crafts/trades had guilds regulating who could pursue them, but blacksmiths were so ubiquitous that I doubt such controls could ever be enforced on them.

@Julia Szent-Györgyi Guilds originated in the 8th century in France and their point was for its members to protect and help each other as well as further their interests. They also regulated how one could become a member and how to learn the craft/trade in question. Most crafts and trades had guilds; not all of them, but the vast majority of them did.

Blacksmiths (as well as gold smiths and silver smiths) were often organised in Zünften (guilds).

@Davis Aaron Arthur1 There may be mention of it at the state archive or the local archive of the area you're looking for, if you can find out which guilds were active there at the time. It's unlikely there was a list for all of them, however.

@Julia Szent-Györgyi This is the Area that my ancestors was born in 1816. Polsnitz, Waldenburg, Breslau, Silesia, Prussia, Germany, I am really not familiar with the Polish country that this area resides in at the moment. How would I proceed In trying to see what Zuenften Records I could find. My phone doesn't work for the u in German so I do apologize for any spelling errors. And I have not spoken German for years.

@Davis Aaron Arthur1 I'm no expert on this. Personally, I'd try the state archive in Breslau (Wrocław) and ask there if they have any records or if they know anything to aid you. If you know a bit of German, this site may also be of help: https://www.vfgs.eu/Forschungshinweise/Archive.html
