Convent? Hospital? Inmates?
In some instances there isn't a head of household, barely a household at all. How do you review a family when it is not a family? The whole page?
I looked at a convent and all the gals were first name only. How do I handle this problem?
Hope I can find your answers when I return to ask a question

@BeverlyDittberner you can see that they are one household, which is a Navy Ship, if I understand correctly. You say that the page showed up to be check and no names are highlighted. Since you can tell the ones that are the same household (Navy ship), then you can put a check in the box next to the name to highlight them.
In many cases, columns 2 and 3 will be blank. This is to signify that the person listed on that row lives in the same location and dwelling number as the person in the row above. These persons are part of the same household.
Thank you for asking.

@Susan Smith 2412, when you know that they are part of a convent, hospital, inmate, navy ship, etc,, you can tell by looking at other information for them, and also if the household surname field for them is blank, then you know they are part of that household. If there is only a first name, then that is all you would verify or put in. We can do no more than put what is in the document in the correct fields. Do the best you can in this instance.

I came across a military base (air base) in the 1950 census. There is nothing in the relationship column for any line. Should each person on this list be considered a different household?

Hi, @bb_tx Does this information help with your Question? I found it in the Frequently Asked Questions. https://www.familysearch.org/en/help/helpcenter/article/reviewing-institutions-and-hospitals

It probably applies but I'm not certain. In this case (Randolph Field Air Base) there is no information for house number, apartment number, or serial number on any line. Unfortunately, there does not seem to be a way for me to view the previous pages to determine if that information was included there.

If the page is a continuation or continues to the next page, this FAQ might be more appropriate:

Are prisoners considered to all be part of the same household?

@Kent Jaffa Does this answer your question? https://www.familysearch.org/en/help/helpcenter/article/reviewing-institutions-and-hospitals

Thank you. I enjoyed reading it, however I am not sure if it applies.

@Kent Jaffa, the article does apply as the prisoners are all in one household: "The computer will attempt to put all individuals living at the same location (column 2) and serial number (column 3) into one household. You will review these groupings as households, even though the individuals appear not to be related.
In many cases, columns 2 and 3 will be blank. This is to signify that the person listed on that row lives in the same location and dwelling number as the person in the row above. These persons are part of the same household."
I hope that this helps you understand.

Thanks. I thought the article told you what to do with prisoners when they were shown as in one household; not whether they should be defined as being in one household. Nevertheless, I will consider them as being in one household then.

@bb_tx I agree with @MinnWisRoots that when you run across this kind of issue, that it would be better to handle it as an incomplete family since you are unable to see those fields mentioned.

There are 3 pages of names under one household that is a Navy Ship - The page showed up to be checked and no names are highlighted. There is no address - other than a number stamped on each line - Do I add all the names as being in one household? - The Navy Ship?

@bb_tx and @MinnWisRoots we have been instructed to go ahead and index those names that we know are with the ship, airbase, etc., even though it is a continuation and we are unable to see the the head of household, house number, etc. The blanks in those fields indicated they are the same household as the previous. Double check by looking at their occupation, and those fields that could also verify. Such a learning curve. Thank you so much!
Don't worry about the ones that you didn't do. They will be picked up with the next review before publication.

@Karen Blackmore, when it is a list of military personnel on a base, then they are in the same household and you would follow the instructions for indexing a household. Just verify other information to make sure they are in that household. If they are continued from a previous page, there will be blanks in the first couple of boxes, which indicate the same household.
Thank you for asking about this. It is a great question!

@Karen Blackmore, for an institution, they are in the same household, to you make sure all of them are check marked in the right side of the page. If they continue from a previous page, please go ahead and index them as you can tell they are the same household with the first couple of boxes which show empty.
Thank you for your question which helps others with their same questions.
