Question- How wide and deep can you go doing temple work for my cousins and Uncles and Aunts that are not direct line. Like can I do temple work for say my 2nd Cousin, his wife and kids. Or what about my 3rd cousin 4 times removed etc. I am sure when we start getting this wide its not my family but someone else.. maybe yours hey?

    There is no limit beyond 110 years and secured permissions.

    I am already interacting with some beyond 16th cousins.

    Can't recall for sure who is the General Authority in response to somebody saying they had exhausted all ancestors' ordinance works, search out the cousins, effectively telling us there's no restrictions to find cousins to get work done. Right now the majority are within 2-3 cousin degree who were not members of the Church due to large number of convert members. (in my ward, more than half are converts or 2nd/3rd generations.)

    @Mel Holzworth

    I think that there are some basic guidelines to follow when adding names to the tree. Firstly, it is referred to as Family Tree, and as such, our first steps should be family related - direct ancestors.

    Inevitably, we will encounter parts of the tree where other folk have added their family's names, and this is what 'The Tree' is all about. It is a single tree where all of us can interact and add names that we have discovered and verified.

    Cousins, second, third fourth and so on , will appear as we interact with others and more of our family names show, but this is what the tree is all about - connecting to each other.

    How far you extend 'sideways' is a personal matter for you to decide, but I would suggest establishing direct lines for four or five generations and then, as time permits, start working outwards to include cousins and their families as recommended. That way, you will become more familiar with the 'core' names you have entered and people and their relationships will replace just 'names'.

    Whenever you add names to the tree, be sure to add details of the sources you have used to establish the person and their relationships. Add notes too, so that others who may search the records you have entered can see the research you have done and hopefully, not make spurious or inaccurate changes. Be sure to include photos where possible, and add other details that will help change each 'name' to a 'person'.

    I would have attached a Knowledge article which answers some of the questions you may have, but I am unable to do this as your question relates to ordinances and your FS account isn't linked to your church account yet. This can be changed by going to your Account Settings.

    If you then go to 'Help' and select 'Help Centre' you can type in a question such as 'What is the 110-year policy, and why was it initiated?', and it will offer answers to your questions, particularly if you click on some of the additional links it provides at the bottom of the article

    This is a great work, and it's good to see you involved with it. All the best with your research.

    Kind regards,

    Barry

    1. Thanks Amy, but it does not drill down to what level of Cousins I can process for temple ordinances. I have 5 & 6th cousins in my tree but I dont deem them to be my famly, in fact they are manyt others direct lines. So should I only do say 1st & 2nd Cousins and their cluster or spouses and kids ? Years ago there were defined limited but the definiation of "Collateral family lines (uncles, aunts, cousins, and their families)" is lacking.

    1. Thanks Barry - The Church Handbook and also on Family Search does not define "Collateral family lines (uncles, aunts, cousins, and their families).". Iam a member, **** Stake CLerk and Ordinance workers in the Brisbane Australia Temple. My problem is that when it comes to Cousins and then their wife and kids and then and then, you can end up so wide that in fact its another persons family and not yours. Its the width and not the depth or how many times removed is my problem. Family Search will prompt me to complete ordinaces for as many as 6 or 8th cousins, yet years ago we were limited to 2nd only. Just confusing to me...

    Still get the prompts for as far as 16th cousin.

    That is because so much work had been done for all of my lines except the German/Hungarian lines. Hundreds to do and few family members of the Church.
