Access to microfilm held in Salt Lake City?

Hello!

I am interested in searching for a specific surname within some specific documents. I understand that these documents are on microfilm and held in Salt Lake City. I'm in Canada, so I can't get there myself, and the records aren't digitized. Does anyone have any ideas for how I can have these records examined?

Many thanks,

Eileen

All microfilm held in Salt Lake has now been digitized. See https://www.familysearch.org/en/newsroom/familysearch-completes-digitization-of-massive-microfilm-collection

If you are seeing a film reel icon, that no longer means not digitized but indicates that access is restricted and cannot be viewed from home.

If you can narrow what you need, there is a remote lookup service. You can request copies of some pages. Details here:

https://www.familysearch.org/en/blog/new-library-lookup-service-for-when-you-cant-visit-the-family-history-library and the form to make a request is https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=s-7mYddfqkquPGHo3rCbeXDgy5vNu0pJhOnXB8jRDZtUNzlIR1VFVkhEWFNSVVFQNDRTUjdGRzRFVy4u

Ok, great! So items such as this should be available when I visit a family history centre? https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/590077?availability=Family%20History%20Library

    Or an Affiliate Library.

Thank you for the information Aine.

Does this mean that all of the digitized film can be viewed in the FHL, even if restricted?

The Catalog indicates which records may be viewed at FHCs.

You then need to confirm before you attend the FHC that the special FS Portal has been installed on the computers in the FHC, which enables viewing of restricted records. From correspondence in this Community, it is apparent that not all FHCs have installed the Portal, in which case restricted records cannot be viewed.

Just to clarify - at the FHL (meaning Salt Lake City), you should be able to view even restricted items. For example, there are books, still under copyright, which have been digitized but cannot be viewed at an Affiliate Library, an FHC (family history center), or from home. Those can be viewed, digitally, at the FHL.
