Do we edit?
I don't understand if we edit or not. If we don't, why is that available? It's very confusing and instructions are hard to find.

Here are the FAQs which contain some instruction. https://www.familysearch.org/en/info/1950-us-census-project-frequently-asked-questions
Yes, you will edit if what you see in the white box doesn't match what is written on the census. You don't actually have to use the edit button though. You can just click into the white box and edit that way. Hopefully this answers your question.

Thank you! I guess I'm trying to learn too many things at once.

It would be helpful if, when you click in the transcription field and press and move the mouse, the image didn't pan but instead went into proper edit mode where you could highlight characters with a swipe of the mouse and possibly change them.
Right now, I can back-space to delete some characters or double-click to select the name and type a replacement. But I'd like to choose characters with a mouse swipe to the right or left of where I click the cursor - all the way to the right or left, or partway, as we can in an Entry Field in the Web Indexing application. I would then type a replacement for those characters. If I swipe now, the whole image pans right or left. Why? If I want to pan the image, I can press and hold the mouse outside the box.
Speaking of the transcription field and the blue highlight area above or below it - I'd like the option of temporarily/momentarily hiding both of those so that I could see the original data unimpeded.

Right now to remove the whole name I use Ctrl-A, Ctrl-X but being able to use the mouse would be faster and better if only part of the name needs to be removed.

If you do a Ctrl+A you can immediately start typing the replacement and don't need to do the Ctrl+X step.
