1950 U.S Census
Hello, I have reviewed quite a few pages and in some cases the white info. box has obscured the very name I need to review and I cannot believe that it is impossible to move it away to give a clear view.
With regards to changing a wrong name, why do names not automatically begin with a capital letter ?
Lastly, sometimes a name will appear as follows : Allen E. Rachel - should it be indexed as Rachel E ?
Regards Jean.

I totally agree on the white box issue! I just started this project today and am finding this frustrating. In some cases, I have to backtrack through several entries that I have already finished, in order to get back to a place in the census where the white box doesn't block what I actually need to see.
That white box really needs to be moveable, at least a bit away from the entry in question, if not free to move further.

Page up and down. Zoom the page. Go Back. None of these bypass fixes contribute to a smooth and easy entry. Bummer!

Hello, I am so pleased that you understand exactly what problems I am experiencing - having to backtrack is a waste of time and energy ! It is likely to be a 'teething' problem with this new project and one that needs immediate attention, otherwise indexers will not bother with this census. It will be interesting to see how long it will take to fix this problem. Regards Jean.

Hi jeanmanwaring1, when a given name is written "E. Rachel" then transcribe it as-is. Some people go by a first initial or abbreviate all names, as in "E. R."

Hello Robert, thanks - it must be an American way - certainly not in the UK.
What is your opinion regarding the 'white info. box' issue ? I will not be indexing the 1950 U.S Census again until this is sorted, to keep back-tracking is just making extra work ! Regards Jean.

I agree, the white box being in a fixed location is a real problem. I could not go back to the previous name as this was on another page. I was reviewing the not sure leftovers of another reviewer, so I was jumping from page to page. Finally with a lot of herky jerky movements of the zoom I could determine the name.

It's all gone very quiet on this subject - is there anyone at Family Search interested in correcting this problem ? Unless I hear otherwise I will take that as a 'no' - if it is that important to get this census indexed then please will the 'Powers that Be' take notice of the problems that we volunteers encounter and do something about them. Regards Jean.

I spare myself this occasional trouble by reviewing the next (partial) name in the batch before accepting the transcription of the current one. This way, the white box is seldom in the way.

You can pop the white box above or below the name by moving the page up or down. I found this out because I like to look at the headers. I prefer the box above the name I'm reviewing as it doesn't block the descenders.

I've also found that shrinking the page, I mean zooming out, makes the box shift enough that I can see the word it is blocking. Of course the word becomes smaller, so this is not a very good work around. And speaking of that, I wish we could zoom IN a little closer to look at words. That would be very helpful when trying to distinguish lowercase S from E.

Hello, many thanks for all your suggestions - but we shouldn't have to find alternative ways round this problem, whoever is in charge of the page format should be taking note of what we are all saying and get it sorted ! Cheers all, Jean.
