No one Home or Vacant

If you are reviewing names from your computer, click on Transcription Error on the bottom right of your screen. You can then choose Not a Name from the list of possible issues.
If you are using a phone or pad, click on the three dots on the right side of the screen to go to Transcription Error.
We hope this helps.

Here are the instructions for the ----Surname:
What should I do with “--” in the Surname field?
- In Name Review, leave it as is and mark as a Match. Think of it as shorthand for the actual surname.
- In Family Review, replace it with the surname itself.
For the "No one home," when you see things like this go to the transcription error flag (at the bottom right of the window) and choose the error list that makes the most sense for what you are seeing. In this case "Not a name" would be a good option.

Hi, Rayleen!
This has been answered previously: Click on TRANSCRIPTION ERROR at the bottom right of your screen. Then click on NOT A NAME and submit.
Check FAQs for more "project instructions", especially the section REVIEWING THE INDEX: https://www.familysearch.org/en/info/1950-us-census-project-frequently-asked-questions

I've been working on reviewing names for the 1950 Census. Quite often the fields contain something such as "no one at home," "vacant," etc. The computer thinks these are names and puts them in the given and/or surname fields. What should I do in these cases?

@CJTobler , thank you -- I hope your instructions can be part of a set of Facts highlighted right at the top of every forum/page relating to the 1950 Census

I have two questions about Review 1950 Census:
- "No one home" is a transcription error, but should I add a comment when I identify it this way?
- A line ( _____________ ) for surname means the surname is the same as the one above it. Should I fill in the surname for this person?

Since there are so many No one home entry's I think you should make a specific option to choose to make it faster.

Sometimes the line ( ______ ) indicating same surname, is computer indexed as a dash ( - ). I am not sure what to do about that.

It appears to me when the highlight is on the wrong line, a line has been skipped. Is this going to be corrected?

I've noticed several complete LINES of the Census missing. Another good place to use the "Transcription Error" button which includes a specific category for the issue. I can't remember the specific title, but it seemed very appropriate.
It appears it goes to FSTech directly.

When the family review option launches (hopefully within a few days), reviewers will have an opportunity to correct this.

For the surname the handwritten image says "no one home". The AI box gives the surname as No Cone. How would I mark this?

When you see "no one home" you can click on the flag icon and check the "not a name" box.

SOOOOO many lines listed as VACANT or NO ONE HOME and the system tries to index that line. I hope relatively quickly the system is updated to recognize to skip those lines!
Also sometimes it recognizes a line through it (indicating same surname) and others it acts like THAT is the surname!

I stopped reviewing because there were too many "No one at home" entries and the system was much too slow and laggy after I selected the flag icon and check the "not a name box". This desperately needs to be streamlined. I apologize because it might not seem like a big deal, but I don't have the patience to wait ten to twenty seconds twice for each line where nobody is home.
Besides this, I'm very impressed by the job the OCR has done so far.

What so we do when " no one at home", or other non Surname items show up on the review?
Do we correct them to read "no one at home", or blank them out?

I'm looking for an answer to the same question.

In the Utah 1950 census my first batch is asking me to check 'NOT HOME' . I did correct it but I was concerned that it will make it as a name on the census. What should I do in this circumstance?

You need to click TRANSCRIPTION ERROR on the bottom right corner of your screen, then click NOT A NAME. Do read FAQs, especially the section REVIEWING THE INDEX--it's like project instructions for the census.

Hello, you click on the pink EDIT logo, remove them, then submit. Do not correct them !

Well reviewing the 1950 Census, I have come across lines where the census taker has written 'None Home'. How should these lines be dealt with? Should they be erased or simply Submitted as 'None Home.' Thank you for your responses.

Regarding this, my ancestors should have appeared on this page (https://www.familysearch.org/records/images/image-details?place=339&page=1&endDate=1950&startDate=1950&keyword=%22ED:%2031-2418%22&rmsId=TH-7734-115381-21942-45&imageIndex=2&singleView=true) or several subsequent pages. Many lines are marked citing a later page, but the image group doesn't extend beyond that. How do we find this image's place in the roll to scroll to the pages referenced?

There is an icon in the bottom right corner that says "Transcription Error" click on it and check "not a name"

It's gotten much, much better today!

For me it's gotten slower today.

I just blanked the line out so that it showed nothing. Is that the right way to handle it?

Vacant is what is said on the line. In fact one page was half with vacant and the other half unused. I just blanked the field because it wasn't a person. Was that the right thing?
