Deed index. Two given names or two individuals?

US, New York, Capital—Index to Land Records, Grantees, 1630–1975 [Part A][MSYL-564]

Right off--a question. In the Deeds Ledger the EFGH column for the Grantee given name is "Edwin". Right next to it is "May" in the I J Column. The surname under Grantee is "Guire". Can I assume that "May" is a second given name and not a second individual grantee since they are on the same line and "May" is not in the KLMNOP column?

Under location column it reads: see Mayguire

My best guess is one person but with part of Last name - May/Mac - separated for some reason.

I'd probably leave May off and just index the first name - it should be found that way and the researcher can come to their own conclusion.

Maybe input Surname as: Guire OR Mayguire

    M*guire OR *guire

Thank you. I think I will type it as Edwin M. Guire. That seems safe.

There is a middle initial column and M is not there - thus it is a little confusing ... except the note seems to indicate it is part of last name.

The note (“see Mayguire”) seems to indicate that the clerk was not sure of the interpretation of the “May” (I.e. part of the GN or SN). I think I’d put Edwin May Guire all in the GN field and Ctrl+B the SN field. I would not just index the initial (I.e., omit full May). The Researchers will see the note too.

If you look farther down the column you will see May listed as a standalone name. We see nothing that tells us to just ignore a name. Please index this as two individuals. It is the 'safest' option and will be most helpful to the researcher.

I would also index Edwin May Guire. Type what you see and don't overthink it.
