Julita, Södermanland - birth record - 19 August 1785. Is the birth name Olaus?

Sweden, Södermanland Church Records, 1604-1900; index 1640-1860; https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33SQ-GPP9-W8DP?cc=1647693&wc=Q6Z7-CK1%3A128004301%2C128088701%2C128766601

On the household record it shows his name as Olof. There is birth date is shown as 29 August, but I can see how that could have been changed.

What an unfortunate place to have that apparatus! I do believe the name is Olaus. Image number 137 has the same name, Olaus, written in Latin script so it looks more like what we would expect Olaus to look like. Your record is written in Gothic script, and it looks like "Olau_" to me. There really isn't anything else it could be.

As far as Olaus vs. Olof, they are the same name. Olaus, Ola, Olof, Oluf, Olle, Olav are all the same name. See this article in the Wiki concerning Swedish Personal Names. Especially the section "Interchangeable First Names": https://www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/Sweden_Personal_Names

Thank you, Norm. Thank for the article on the interchangeable first names. Some I had figured out, but many were new. It will be helpful as I get more into the 1700's. Glad to know I was headed the correct direction.
