Paton family and Covenantor connection
I am trying to find out more about my great-great-grandfather Andrew Paton (born Aberdeen ca1805- died in Oudtshoorn, South Africa in 1876). There are several family stories about a connection with Captain John Paton, a Covenantor of Meadowhead, Fenwick, executed at Edinburgh April 25, 1684. I have Andrew Paton's marriage certificate to Jane Yeats on June 13, 1837 in Cape Town, and his death certificate dated Aug 8, 1876 at Oudtshoorn, aged 71, occupation carpenter. That is the total sum of my knowledge and I have had no luck on several genealogy sites trying to find out more about him. I'm desperate for any assistance or suggestions. Many thanks, Russell Eldridge, Brunswick Heads, Australia.

@Russell Eldridge I found this information that might give you a piece to your puzzle. I didn't see Andrew's name in this, but perhaps it can give some information as to where to look, if it is the same line.

Thanks Shannon. It's much appreciated. I'll go through it all. I really don't know where to turn to, and can't afford a professional researcher. Regards, Russell

Further to what has been given you with connection to the covenantors and which might give more of an insight to what your ancestor was like, have you tried these links below.

Looking at and reading about the places your ancestor frequented may give an even greater insight of what sort of person he was.
I hope the information given will be helpful to you.
Best regards
