Parents of David Parkhurst, 1792-1872, K2WR-KKD
I'm trying to extend knowledge of our family history back before my Great-Great-Great-Grandfather David Parkhurst. My aunt did a fair amount of genealogical research a number of years ago, but her notes indicate she was stymied by a town hall fire that destroyed birth and marriage records. David came to Michigan about1820 from New Haven, Vermont, but I can't find any record of a town hall fire there. There are records of a number of Parkhursts in the New Haven, Connecticut, area, which might make one think that Someone recorded the state wrong, but one are named David, and none had children named David in that time frame. My Great-Great-Great Grandmother (David's wife) was Lydia Darrow. Does anyone have any ideas about how to proceed with this?

That should read "...NONE are named David, ...." --Howard Parkhurst

Howard; The 1850 and 1870 censuses listed in David's record both show him as being born in New York. The name Parkhurst is not uncommon and there were probably thousands in the New England/New York area from this period. A check of the church records for the places he may have been born might prove fruitful.

Thank you for your suggestions. The prior family tree research undertaken by relatives say he was born in New Haven, Addison County, Vermont, and that he came to Michigan by way of New York and Ohio. That may be inaccurate. At any rate, I'll start trying to examine church baptismal and marriage records. I wish my grandfather had shown interest in this topic; David would have been his great grandfather.

Do you know whether David's parents emigrated? A lot of times, that accounts for the sudden drop off of information. Lydia appears to have been born in 1803 in Massachusetts, and died in 1843 in Michigan.

MyHeritage lists David's birthdate as January 15, 1792 (in Vermont); he died in Michigan in 1872 of Bright's Disease.
