Mods and more?
Something ive been wondering about for a little bit now is how are people picked as mods? Everyone starts out as an indexer, then they can start reviewing. Is mod something else we can work towards? Are there other things that we can do to make a bigger mark in this community?

I am just another 'lowly' User/Patron ...
"Indexing" is ONLY one Part of 'FamilySearch'.
The "Community.FamilySearch" Forum, was established on the premise of ...
Users/Patrons, HELPING / ASSISTING, Users/Patrons.
And, had been operating quite successfully as such, for a number of Years now.
And, for those years, right up to earlier this Year, the "Community.FamilySearch" Forum, was simply Users/Patrons, helping/assisting, Users/Patrons.
Somewhat recently (this Year) was the 'Demise' of the 'FamilySearch' "Support" Cases Management System.
With that demise; and, NO alternate System, the 'FamilySearch' "Support" (Personnel) were "Moved" to this "Community.FamilySearch" Forum; and, were given the identifier of "Moderators".
So ...
That Said ...
For you information ...
'Lowly' Users/Patrons of 'FamilySearch', regardless of whether, they are simply ALL Users/Patrons of :
▬ 'FamilySearch' (those just searching the records); or,
▬ the "Family Tree" Part, of 'FamilySearch' (those that have "Ancestral Lines; or,
▬ the "indexing" Part, of 'FamilySearch' (ie. those that Index/Review),
are ALL Participants in this "Community.FamilySearch" Forum.
Whereas.
Moderators [ ie 'FamilySearch' "Support" (Personnel) ] are NOW (as of earlier this Year), those that assist in the "Community.FamilySearch" Forum; as, Part (and, on behalf) of 'FamilySearch'.
Now ...
That Said ...
There is a lot, that 'lowly' Users/Patrons, can do to make the "Community.FamilySearch" Forum strong.
One of the best ways, for 'lowly' Users/Patrons to make the "Community.FamilySearch" Forum strong, is to HELP / ASSIST Other Users/Patrons; where, they can (according to their Strengths), by 'Answering'/'Commenting' on 'Questions'/'Ideas' posted by others; or, posting 'Questions'/'Ideas' themselves.
The "Community.FamilySearch" Forum is ONLY as strong as its Participants.
'Lowly' Users/Patrons, are NOT "Guests", of the "Community.FamilySearch" Forum.
'Lowly' Users/Patrons ARE, in fact, Participants, of the "Community.FamilySearch" Forum.
And, to even help / assist more, Participants, of the "Community.FamilySearch" Forum, can "Join" (and, be members of) the various 'Groups', of the "Groups" Section, of the of the "Community.FamilySearch" Forum.
There are many 'Groups' of varying interest.
A Participant can "Join", just one 'Group'; or, any number of 'Groups', that interest them.
The 'Groups' are a great way to, Learn; Teach; and Help/Assist ...
Be an "Active" Participant ...
That is one way to make a bigger mark on this "Community.FamilySearch" Forum.

With updates coming to the Community, it is best not to speculate about those who currently have "Mod" associated with their Community name.
You have mentioned that you specifically work at FamilySearch in the Indexing part of the site and are aware that Indexers can become Reviewers in that area, and you appear to be interested in doing even more in the Community setting.
There are many programs and features at FamilySearch, and the FamilySearch Support personnel serve where they are trained. Just look at all of the Community Help Center Categories to get a broader picture of the scope of FamilySearch in regard to assisting our guests who wish to expand their family history efforts,
Everyone is welcome to provide answers in the Community, and while there have been individuals who have been able to forward concerns to specialty teams to resolve specific concerns, everyone is still invited to share their experiences and expertise in the Community setting. The changes that are forthcoming will go into effect in November according to @Mark McLemore who is a community Admin. His post about these changes appears on the Home page and can be reviewed through the following URL.
Perhaps your question and others related to helping in the Community will be answered through the updates.
