Canada Ontario Tax Assessments 2 Dates

There are 2 dates at the top of the page. It's says "1896 for 1897".
Which year should I use?

In the General Indexing Guidelines for this project, there is a link to indexing dates:
• If multiple dates were given for a birth, type the earliest date.
• If multiple dates were given for other events, type the most recent or latest date.
