New Process for Temple Name Cards

I am really struggling with the new process of the temple NOT returning the name cards following one ordinance being completed! First, I don't like it! Second, if this will continue, will the cards be reformatted to only have one ordinance print at a time? Why can't the temple patron just scan in and record the ordinance being completed as you exit like they used to do in the dressing room before the ordinance was even completed if germs are the issue. In the meantime, my reservation list is massive with the temples being closed and all the new work I have researched and prepared in the meantime. How do I manage searching for the name cards that need to be reprinted if they say they've already been printed? And then not be all confused when reprinted that they say reprinted? Yes, want to vent! Want there to be different solutions. But in the meantime, looking for help to manage this new process. Any suggestions?

    Welcome to the "Community.FamilySearch"" Forum.

    As an aside ...

    You are not alone ...

Some, maybe many, DO NOT, like; or, appreciate, that the "Temple" Cards are NOT being "Returned" after the "Completion" of the "Ordinance" Work"; and, then, subsequent processing/recording.

Some, maybe many, WANT, to RETAIN the "Temple" Cards, after ALL the Work is "Completed" as a "Keepsake". Unfortunately, we can no longer to that.

    FYI

We have been advised, that the main reasons, why the "Temple" Cards, are NOT being RETURNED, after the "Completion" of the "Ordinance" Work"; and, then, subsequent processing/recording are:

    (1) To enable "Secondary" Processing of the Cards, to ensure the Cards have actually been recorded; and,

    (2) In SOME "Temples', ONLY about 6% of the "Temple" Cards, that were "Completed" and "Processed", were actually being "Collected" by Patrons. My understanding is that, that 6% relates to mainly the "Temples" in the "Utah Valley" (and, possibly some of the larger "Temples" in the USA). Unfortunately, the non-return of Cards has been applied to ALL "Temples" world-wide.

There has also been the reason proffered that the non-return of the Cards, would take the "Pressure" of "Temple" Workers, in getting Cards processed and recorded.

The decision is an really an administrative one; but, one that has been ratified and "Authorized".

    Just some insight.

    Hello, @Maria Sala Johnson.

Further to Brett's explanation, here is the link to the knowledge article that explains the new procedure:

    https://www.familysearch.org/help/helpcenter/article/do-temples-still-return-family-name-cards

When searching for the article in the Help Center, this subtitle appears:

"Changes have been made to reduce temple recording errors."

And, an idea for keeping track of your family names - when printing cards, print a second set for your own record to use as a tracking "device." This set you wouldn't cut -- just leave the sheet intact and insert into a notebook and you can check off the ordinances as they are completed.

If it's any consolation, many people feel the same way as you do about the changes. One thing is for sure, as Pres. Nelson has counseled us -- take your vitamins and hold on -- the work is being hastened in more ways than one and it can be a little difficult to keep up. But, things will work out.

Thanks Brett (not a lowly member) & MNuttall! I do like the suggestion to print 2 copies. I still am worried about finding the names and knowing which cards need to be reprinted. I have A LOT! Maybe this new change should have been held off on until they made the system change to have the option to not have the cards print ALL the ordinances on one card, but print separate ones for each ordinances or still opt for all in one for instances where all the work would be completed in one day- oh, wait- would they give the card back in this instance? Or would the temple just reprint another one after each ordinance completed? Well, I probably wouldn't do this, but just something that probably wasn't processed when the administrative decision was made.

OTHER SUGGESTIONS FROM OTHER DILIGENT FAMILY HISTORIANS & TEMPLE GOING SOULS TO MANAGE NAME CARDS IN THIS NEW PROCESS?

You can print a card for a single ordinance by clicking the blue-box checkmarks to delete the ordinances not to be performed on that particular card. To deal with the problem of ordinance cards not being returned for our records I have taken pictures of my ordinance cards with my iPhone before I went to the temple in Phase 3. I just wonder if a patron can take a card where he/she has just performed the scheduled initiatory ordinance and then take that name to do the scheduled endowment. The temples are destroying used cards and therefore have no hard copy to back up the electronic system in case it crashes.

Yes, if you intend to complete all the ordinances in one day, you would let the ordinance workers know that you needed the card back in order to move on to the subsequent ordinance. Once all the ordinances on the card are completed the temple would retain the card, record the ordinances and then destroy the card.

Here's what the knowledge article (link included above) says about this:

Can I perform more than 1 ordinance for an ancestor during the same visit?

Yes. To perform multiple ordinances for an ancestor during a single visit, select the ordinances you will complete, and print the name card. Once at the temple, notify temple workers of your intention and ask that they return the card to you for the next ordinance. They will collect the card at the conclusion of your visit.

Randall Anthony Robinson- Thanks! In the future, I will print for only certain ordinances for future print outs, but that doesn't help with the ones already printed, unfortunately. Thanks for that reminder that you can do that! I didn't ever have reason to not print for all the ordinances!

I did try to go back and print out the notifications of the ordinances completed, but it didn't print out very pretty, but that was one idea.

MNuttal- Thanks for if I ever did have a certain card to do all in one day!

Oh, looks like they've formatted a much nicer pdf file that you can print and save to your computer of "Completed Temple Records" found in FamilySearch.org/ Temple/ Completed category when you select the box for the completed ordinances! Yay!
