Adoption and beginning a new tree
After 15 years of strong research and building strong trees, joining organizations, I found out last week I am adopted. Which means I must start with a new empty tree. (I am not young) blindsided? I feel that way. At my age you would have thought someone would have said something .
I have strong DNA with 1-4 (and on) cousins. Over the years researching I thought is strange that NOT ONE name was familiar and not one family was from where I grew up.
How do I move forward in building a new tree and FOREMOST Deleting the tree that exists on FAMILYSEARCH?

I can't imagine how tough that must be to just find out about being adopted. I'm adopted, but I've known about it for as long as I can remember. I'm sorry you're having to go through that.
You don't have to delete all of your hard work, though. After all, they are still your relations... just adopted ones. There is a way to change the relationship status between you and your adopted parents, so that it shows as adopted rather than birth parents.
On your person page, scroll down to the bottom where it shows you listed as a child under your parents. Click on the little pencil next to your name. It brings up a screen where you can edit the relationship type. You can change it from Biological to Adopted.

It must be a surprise, that may take time to fully process. Like Chris, I've always known that I was adopted, and I've known who my birthmother was since I became an adult.

I didn't even know there was that option to edit relationship type. I just clicked on Add Parent and added my birthmother even though I already had my adoptive mother listed.
Now I'm researching both my adoptive parents' trees and my birthmother's tree. No need to delete any tree -- after all, they're all part of the single big FamilySearch tree.
