Bernard RILEY Born1840 Belturbet, Cavan, Ireland lived in New Zealand from 1861 to about 1884 then went to South Africa. Bernard Died in South Africa, 1910 we believe in Durban. How do I find a death record or a grave site or information about his death. I have tried the Gov't agents, South African Genealogy Society and other web-sites in South Africa and so far no help

I also could not find a death record in Durban. Have you tried other locations in South Africa? I notice he had a son who died in Vrededorp, Johannesburg, Transvaal, South Africa. I'm sorry not to be of more help.

Does anyone else in this group have more ideas?

    Hi Carol,

Thanks for you help. I just don't have the knowledge to search in South Africa, so to try other places is like looking for a needle in a hay stack. I am hoping that someone who knows just how and where to search in South Africa can advise me. There were three sons that died in South Africa, I have their records, But so far none of the living siblings in South Africa have been able to tell me anything about the death of Bernard.

If anybody in the group has a suggestion it would be great.

    Nick

I don't know much about South Africa research, but from the little bit that I've done I've learned that FamilySearch has quite a few records for the different provinces. Many are digitized but not yet indexed. There are also some how-to pages listed. You can find both indexed and non-indexed images of records and the how-to information for South Africa research on this location page: https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/location/1927115?region=South%20Africa

If you have searched so far through indexed records, you definitely want to look at the images that haven't yet been indexed. The 'Estate Files' are essentially probate records, so they could be very valuable to you. The one that I found on my family member gave two different names that he went by, both wives' names and all of his children.
