Add more info to the Gedcom page
Several times over the last year I have tried to add a Gedcom tree of about 12,000. I could never get it to work including talking to someone on the help phone line. Recently, I received a note re: Roots Tech and connecting with cousins through out tree's on Familysearch.org. Yikes ----
so I went in and decided to try and add in my family by hand vs. using the Gedcomm. --------
Here is my suggestion- let users know how easy it is to do. I didn't have to add in 12,000 people - I added in about 7-11 people and the duplicates popped up. Yes, I still have some checking to do on some of the upper generations - past 6 and 7. Imagine the hours I would have had to invest in checking duplicates on 12,000 (using my gedcom) or 7-11 (using the trees that are already there)
thank you!

Yep. Most people who come here with the ambition of loading their entire tree into the FS FamilyTree usually don't understand that the FSFT is a SINGLE tree and the system is set up to eliminate duplicates. They also don't realize that most of what is in their GEDCOM file is already in the FSFT.
The GEDCOM upload facility in the FSFT is really for:
- Archiving your GEDCOM file in a way that anyone can search it
- Providing a way to COMPARE your GEDCOM file to records in the FSFT (updating the FSFT where necessary).
But you are right, it is way too easy for new folks to misunderstand how that all works (they usually assume it is the same as uploading a GEDCOM file to Ancestry.com which is a totally different concept). Also, you can do a LOT of damage to the FSFT by not understanding the nuances of the FS GEDCOM system. Many, many, people have requested for it to be removed due to damage that they've had to waste hours of time fixing because of abuse (intended or otherwise) through the GEDCOM upload feature.
