I am trying to find out more about my ancestor, Jean Baptiste Neumann. All I know is that he was supposedly born in Luxembourg about 1824. I am up against a brick wall with this. Any suggestions of where to start? Thanks, Nancy C.

You will probably need the name of the town or village where he lived, or the name of his parents. Neumann and variants is a reasonably common name, and Jean Baptiste is extremely common in the French speaking world. There was probably many people with this name alive at any one point in Luxembourg.

I suggest making a thorough search in the records of the country he immigrated to, before looking at the Luxembourg records. See: https://www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/Luxembourg_Civil_Registration for advice on vital records from Luxembourg.

Thank you so much for this information. At some point Jean Baptiste Neumann moved to Paris, France, as some of his children were born there, including my great grandmother, Catherine Eugenie Neumann, born 20 Feb 1869. Catherine married in Paris, France to Jean Pierre Irthum. Jean Pierre was born in Niederanven, Luxembourg in 1866. Thank you again for your help!!

    Best regards, Nancy
