I need help in translating some Norwegian records found out on the Digitalarkivet. I can read some but am not sure about parts of the records.
Is there some one who can review with me the records?
Also how do I determine what the Feast Day is?

My first question is regarding

Ambjor Helgesdr1793 – 5 March 1837 • LHLV-96V

I have attached a christening source but do not understand the top part of the record I attached Aal is the parish 2 J.....dag

https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/memories/LHLV-96V

Second Question

There was a source attached to Engebret Holgesen Hushaugen

10 April 1785 – 19 February 1861 • G36S-RSL and it says the following

Feast Day Calendar for Second Sunday after Pascha

https://media.digitalarkivet.no/en/view/8545/63 Image 63 of 187.

I used Google to try and determine the date but it made no sense.

In the parish register I can read his mother's name Guro Knudsdr but am unsure of the father. It should be Knud Helgesen but it does not look like that to me.

Thank you for any help

You might like this FamilySearch website to help with Norway Feast Day Calendars. https://www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/Norway_Feast_Day_Calendars

It is the first on the list, Paaske (Påske). When you view a record that gives a feast day and you want to know the date, the next step is to select the year (FS wiki) and then the specific feast day. The day could be written in Latin or Norwegian. So, for example in 1793 Pascha is 31 March. https://www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/Norway:_Moveable_Feast_Days_in_1793 @Gwen Tryon Heaton is that helpful?

My favorite feast day calendar calculator is:

    https://dinslekt.no/helligdager.php

Just put in the year to see all the named Sundays and Feast days in the Norwegian or Latin versions in which you will find them in the parish records.

Now to your actual first question.

First let me just mention that it is really helpful for these kinds of question to post the "Quick Link" to the image you are looking at. It is usually necessary to review the entire page, be able to page back and forth, and to zoom in and out to figure out how to read a particular record.

    For Ambjor this is:

    https://www.digitalarkivet.no/kb20070314660109

The "Permanent Image Link" is not as useful because you don't get any of the tools to work with the page.

The portion you asked about says "Aal 2nd Juledag" that is, "2nd day of Christmas", i.e. December 26.

    Now your second question regarding:

    https://www.digitalarkivet.no/kb20070314660063

    and Engebret

The record does not say "Second Sunday after Pascha" if it did, you would see something like "Dom. 2. post Pascha" instead, the record gives the other name for the same Sunday, "Dominica Misericordia" which is April 10 in 1785.

Regarding his father, Engebret Holgesen Hushaugen's father cannot be Knut! Otherwise his name would be Engebret Knutsson Hushaugen.

The parish record for the Engebret, if I am reading this right, does state his parents are Holger Hushaugen (no patronymic is included) and Guro Knudsdatter.

Going back to your question about Sundays and Feast Days and figuring them out in the records, let me share a couple of tips that I figured out when learning to cope with the older records and difficult handwriting. Some items to keep in mind really helped:

    1) Something happened almost every Sunday and was recorded.

    2) Looking at the entire page, usually at least one date was obvious.

    3) The same Sundays and Feast days occurred every year in the same order.

Going back to Ambjør, here is the page she was on with all the dates circled:

Scanning down them, the easiest one to read is 2 Advent (although 1, 3, and 4 Advent are pretty easy also).

Looking at the DinSlekt calendar and entering 1792 (which is the year Ambjør was born, not 1793), here is the section of the year that contains Advent:

Screen Shot 2020-01-19 at 8.14.08 AM

In this list, the first Feast day after the 4the Sunday of Advent does start with a J, but there is not a 2 in front of it. The next day has both the 2 and the J and now you know it is 2nd Juleday, you can compare that to the written text and see that you have the right day.

Using that same procedure for Engebret, the clearest date on the page is Palm. which can only be Palm Sunday. There on the list of Sundays and Feast Days, the Sunday shortly after Palm Sunday starting with an M was Misericordia. Comparing text to handwriting, you can see that that is what the record says.

(Trivia note: you will notice that some of the days on the DinSlekt page are in light gray. These days were discontinued as holy days in 1770.)
