I have hit a brick wall with my gg grandmother. How can I use my mothers DNA results to find out about this unknown woman?

The information that I have is a name (not sure if it is real), immigration record from ship, but once she came to US/Canada not a trace. My feeling is that the immigration is wrong but can't find any information either from where she came from or where she went to...

In order to find out more about this woman from your mother's DNA, you would have to start keeping track of DNA matches and determine what common ancestor that person shares with your mother. Then when you find a DNA match that you cannot find a common ancestor, investigate the other person's tree to see if it is likely (place, date, surname) that it could be this immigrant ancestress. That is the general plan that I am taking on my own unknown ggg?grandmother.

Just like Anne said.. But if your DNA is with Ancestry... they have a great button called SHARED MATCHES. You double click on the Circle (with the picture - usually the DNA persons face) and then click on Shared Matches.. this will do the hard work for you. This will show what common ancestors you share with only that person. Sometimes you get No matches! Sometimes you get 30 matches with below 20cMs matches (if you are lucky!) So good luck!

@Lori LoriJohnston1 Which testing company did you use to get your mother's DNA results from?

ancestry...I did use the shared matches but just got ancestors that know nothing about this match, as well I have gone through the matches but can't seem to locate anyone. I have gone back and pulled her childrens death records and none indicate "mother". It is really weird that I can't find any trace of her. I have even gone so far as the Saratov archives and tried to locate a birth and marriage certificate with no luck. I can't find any information on her husband either, Martin Lanz. They are both suppose to be from Rastadt but other than a name, neither are in the archives. I have been trying to locate another place where they potentially could have immigrated to Rastadt from but no luck. Any direction is greatly appreciated.

I would love to help, but you have covered all bases (as far as my limited knowledge goes). There probably isn't a lot of DNA tests done in the places you are looking in unfortunately.

Wishing you all the best. Sorry!
