Good morning,

There is a cousin marriage in my family tree that I cannot seem to figure out how to get the ancestor moved to the right spot. 2MTZ-TTX and 96YW-Q54 were brothers but spelled the names differently (as was the style at the time). Is there some way to fix this? Thanks!

    Thank you for your post.

If we are understanding correctly, you are saying that Thomas Payne  2MTZ-TTX and Robert Bynum Paine 96YW-QS4 are brothers, both sons of John Isaac Paine LK6V-WQB and Francis Coleman LDTM-NRK, but you are concerned Robert is not directly underneath his brother Thomas Payne 2MTZ-TTX in the Tree view you posted,

If the individual records information is correct (i.e. children and the children's spouses) then the Tree view you posted is correct. Notice that Robert Bynum Paine 96YW-QS4 shows as a younger brother to Thomas Payne  2MTZ-TTX in the Children drop-down of their parents John Isaac Paine LK6V-WQB and Francis Coleman LDTM-NRK.

The confusion may be that Robert's nephew, Thomas Payne 9HDS-SSD (son of Robert's brother Thomas Payne  2MTZ-TTX and Elizabeth Johnson L5T7-VF9), married Robert's daughter, Rachel Paine KG8W-SVJ. The Tree shows Robert Bynum Paine and Rachel Ellen Lord as Rachel Paine's parents.

If you click the right facing arrow to the right of Robert Bynum Paine and Rachel Ellen Lord, you will see his parents are John Isaac Paine LK6V-WQB and Francis Coleman LDTM-NRK, just like Thomas Payne  2MTZ-TTX .

They just don't line up on the Tree because Thomas Payne 9HDS-SSD and Rachel Paine KG8W-SVJ are first cousins, once removed.

There is a great chart in the Blog article link below that helps understand how cousins are related.

Hopefully this is help clear up the confusion.

If the children-parent relationships are currently incorrect, please reply with what is incorrect and we can provide you with the Help Center articles to correct those relationships.

Thank you so much--yes, the individual records all match up. That makes perfect sense about the cousins. It didn't help that Thomas had a son named Thomas. I was trying to create a chart for my dad to show the family line back to Europe, which is quite a few generations and the 1st cousin, once removed was making it difficult to display.

I work in land records in local government so this is far too much like work for a Sunday morning.

    Thanks again and take care!
