How can I find my 3rd great grandfather, Joseph Casner's parents? He was born in NJ about 1811.
My third great grandfather, Joseph Casner, was born in NJ around 1811 and died in 1888. I have hit a brick wall; I am unable to find his parents. What can I do to get past this brick wall?

Judy, thank you for your question. These brick walls are sometimes difficult to penetrate. However, to more effectively search, please provide more information if you have it. At the very least, please provide the ID number in FamilySearch so that we could see the records and use that as a starting point. Thank you.

To make your searches in FamilySearch Search more productive here are some instructions to improve your searching. Please understand that when following the Search menu Records link that you are searching only the indexed records that consist of about 35% of the records we hold.

They are minimally identified and have waypoints added then are available for search at Search Images. I have found Joseph Casner on the census records starting in 1850. He married Alice/Elsie Mount at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in 1832. I have the church records. Joseph and Alice are buried in the churchyard; they both died in 1888. The church does not have records of Joseph's parents. The NJ State Archives has a death certificate for Alice but not for Joseph. Prior to 1850, I am unable to find any information on Joseph or his parents. In Family Search, this is the ID number: Joseph Casner

I need to find out how to proceed so I can find out who Joseph's parents were. The name Casner may have been changed from a different spelling.

I found Joseph Casner, GSHR-K9G, in FamilySearch. I clicked in FamilySearch under Search Records on the right column. When I filtered with the birth place of New Jersey, a birth date of 1808-1815, a death date of 1888 and a wife Alice, I found several records that might be your ancestor. You would have to look at each of them to see if they match. I could not find his parents, but at least you have a start. I suggest you fill in the birth dates, death dates and any other information to his record in FamilySearch. Also attach the sources you find. That will make it easier to continue your search. Yes, I have already done all this. I obtained all the records on the site for my ancestor, but nothing was available to show who Joseph's parents were.
