There are several towns by that name in Bavaria- see https://s.meyersgaz.org/search?search=weissenbrunn
Any idea which place is the correct one?
Also, what was his religion?

I don't know, but I have several very old documents, all written in German and that information may be on one of these. Do you read old German? I believe he was baptized in a Christian faith.

The top document is a final school report card, which states that Christoph Adam Mueller was born on 21 April 1851 in Schleyreuth. This place belongs administratively to Weissenbrunn, Bezirksamt Kronach, in Oberfranken, Bavaria.
HThe student had attended the weekday school from his 6th to his 13th year of age.
grades:
intellectual gifts: good

penmanship, written composition, mental math, board math, geography and history, drawing, singing: all very good
The student was released to the Sunday school for further education on 11 April 1864. In that system, Sunday school was actually a continuation of your worldly education, just not on work days.

In 1912, Schleyreuth was a hamlet of 184 persons. The residents attended church in the evangelical parish of Weissenbrunn. See https://www.meyersgaz.org/place/21104014
The church records are not available online at this point. However, www.Archion.de has announced that over the next few years the archive of the Evangelical Church in Bavaria will publish all extant church records from its jurisdiction online.
There is a professional genealogist who is a member of the German professional genealogists association who lives in that general area. His name is Thomas Poehlmann. See www.berufsgenealogie.net. The Association also has several other members who work in Bavaria. Hiring someone is probably the easiest way to get information about your ancestors at this time. You can also try to write to the parish directly and see if they can help you at least get your ancestor's baptism record and possibly his parents' marriage. The parish office may also be able to recommend a local individual you could hire to do further research. See http://weissenbrunn-evangelisch.de/weissenbrunn/ for contact information.
Good luck!
