1700-1850 Stanley family of Jefferson County, New York
I have been searching for the last several years for information to document my great-great grandfather's parents (William B. Stanley, KCYJ-MT1 ) who was born in 1817 in the area of Henderson, Jefferson County, New York. I strongly suspect that his father was named Jedediah Stanley; MFW2-H9F (of Henderson circa 1810). This Jedediah was the brother of Daniel Stanley LCPG-B9V and son of John Stanley who moved from Vermont/New Hampshire to Rutland, Jefferson County, New York in about 1801-1802.
Unfortunately, by the 1855 census, Jedediah ( would have been 85 years old) had moved away from Henderson and it appears that his wife had passed away by then, so my trail goes cold.
Any assistance in my search would be greatly appreciated.
Bill

@WilliamStanley8, so often the records needed to provide absolute proof don't exist or aren't accessible. The only recourse is to find enough indirect evidence to support a theory. In your case, several things point to Jedediah being the father: 1820 census shows a son under age 10, 1830 census shows a son 10-15 and Jemima's father living near by. I'm sure you discovered this on your own, but is it enough when there are other Stanley's in Jefferson county who could also be William's father? Land records often hold clues to relationships. New York Land records can be found here on FamilySearch:
Note that the Grantor (seller) Index is searchable, but the Grantee (buyer) Index you will have to look up yourself. The index gives you deed book and page number. For example, I looked up W.B. Stanley in the Grantee Index and found the reference N3 page 41. When you look at the deed, pay attention to every name in the document. Are they connected to Jedediah? Relatives? Neighbors? As you examine deeds you may also want to look at a land ownership map. There is one for 1855 listed in the FamilySearch Catalog:
Hopefully, you will find enough evidence to make the case for Jedediah being William's father. Also, finding Jedediah as a grantor in a deed will give you the first name of his wife.
Good luck! Hope this helps.
